Jeff Buckley released a cover of the powerful Leonard Cohen song “Hallelujah” in 1994. In 1997, he went for a fully-clothed swim in the Wolf River in Memphis. The wake of a passing boat overcame him and he drowned. According to this Wikipedia article, there was nothing mysterious about his death and he wasn’t on drugs or alcohol at the time, nor was he suicidal. It was just a senseless tragedy.
When I read about this incident (I didn’t know anything about Buckley until recently), I started writing a story about a young star who falls into a river. My story–the working title is Bad Company–is quite different from Buckley’s. The star is an actor, not a singer/musician, and he does have alcohol, among other things, in his system. But I was inspired by Buckley’s story.
